Medziphema, July 4, 2026: The Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM), in collaboration with the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Nagaland, successfully conducted a three-day training programme on “Beekeeping: Production & Promotion in Nagaland” from 2nd to 4th July 2026 at the SAMETI Conference Hall, Medziphema, followed by practical exposure at the Multi Utility Centre (MUC), NBHM, Sovima.
The training brought together officers from the Department of Agriculture and ATMA functionaries with the objective of enhancing their technical knowledge and practical understanding of scientific beekeeping, honey production, and value addition.
The inaugural session was chaired by Shri Yezaho Swu, Deputy Project Director, SAMETI, while Shri Bodevi Shuya, Director, SAMETI & Principal, IETC, delivered the keynote address. He emphasized the importance of scientific livestock management and the adoption of improved practices to enhance productivity, strengthen rural livelihoods, and promote sustainable development in the livestock sector.
The technical sessions were delivered by NBHM resource persons:
- Er. Khuvoi Vese, Deputy Team Leader, NBHM
- Shri Letgong Patrick, Team Member, NBHM
- Shri Athungo N. Ngullie, Team Member, NBHM
The programme covered a wide range of topics, including:
- Introduction to beekeeping and its scope
- Swarm management, colony capturing, and colony transfer
- The role of bees in crop pollination
- Bee hives and essential equipment
- Economics of beekeeping
- Seasonal management of bee colonies
- Quality control and marketing strategies for honey
A key highlight of the training was the practical exposure visit to the NBHM Multi Utility Centre (MUC), Sovima, where participants observed honey processing, quality control measures, value addition, packaging, and the operation of modern honey processing equipment. The visit provided participants with first-hand insights into post-harvest handling and the importance of maintaining quality standards for market-ready honey products.
The programme also included interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, enabling participants to connect classroom learning with real-world applications and gain a better understanding of the beekeeping value chain in Nagaland.
The three-day training concluded with closing remarks by Shri Bodevi Shuya, Director, SAMETI & Principal, IETC, followed by the distribution of certificates to all participants.
